Methodological Rigor

Rigor Metodológico

We assess whether the research method is well-defined, appropriate for the problem, includes control measures, and could be replicated by another researcher.

Scoring Breakdown

5
Excellent
  • Variables (independent, dependent, controlled) are clearly defined
  • Method is appropriate for the type of problem
  • Sample size and selection criteria are justified
  • Design is replicable by another researcher
  • Control measures minimize bias
4
Good
  • Variables defined with minor gaps
  • Methodology is appropriate
  • Sample size mentioned
  • Mostly replicable
  • Basic control measures described
3
Acceptable
  • Some variables defined
  • Method described but not fully justified
  • Limited reproducibility
  • Some steps unclear
2
Insufficient
  • Variables not defined
  • Method is improvised or incomplete
  • Cannot be replicated
  • No control measures
1
Poor
  • No methodology described
  • Process is entirely unclear
  • No scientific basis
  • Random or anecdotal approach

Common Mistakes

  • Not distinguishing between dependent and independent variables
  • Choosing a method because it's easy, not because it fits the question
  • No mention of sample size or selection criteria
  • Not accounting for potential sources of error

Evaluator Focus

  • Variable definition quality
  • Method-problem fit
  • Reproducibility
  • Bias control

How to Get 5 Points

  • Can another student replicate your experiment exactly?
  • Are your variables explicitly named and defined?
  • Did you explain why you chose this method over alternatives?
  • Did you consider potential errors or biases?
